Tips for Diving in Cold Water in a Wetsuit

Just because the thermocline has disappeared, the leaves have fallen off the trees, and a few measly snowflakes have been spotted is no reason to put all your scuba gear away for the season!  Sure you might get some strange looks when you tell your friends you’re going diving in October or November, but they’ve probably never experienced the calm and quiet at the lake, the great visibility, and the fun of fall diving.

5 Common Mistakes New Divers Make

I recently came across a blog post on the PADI website talking about five common mistakes new divers make. As I read through it, I thought it was actually applicable to divers of all levels. Everyone makes mistakes—that’s part of human nature. The training we undertake and safeguards we put in place, such as always diving with a buddy and performing buddy checks before a dive, help us to uncover mistakes before they become problems.

Choosing a Dive Buddy

During open water training we learn about the importance of always diving with a buddy and never alone—most importantly for safety, but also to share the dive experience. Diving with a buddy ensures we have someone there to help us, and to offer help to, should the need arise.  It can also enhance our experience by having someone to guide us through a new dive site, help point out interesting things underwater that we may have missed, or simply sharing stories about the dive while filling out our logbooks.  So not only is it important to dive with a buddy for all the reasons above, it’s also important to have the right dive buddy! Here are a few things you will want to consider before choosing a dive buddy.
