Growing up in Newfoundland, the ocean became an integral part of Mark’s identity. He learned about Newfoundland’s maritime history and folklore, which included stories of pirates, shipwrecks, and, of course, treasure. From an early age, he developed a deep respect for the sea and its marine wildlife, along with a sense of adventure, inspired by authors such as Clive Cussler, Jacques Cousteau, National Geographic. Since obtaining his open water certification in 2016, he has never regretted any decision related to scuba diving. Reflecting on nearly ten years of diving, it has enriched many aspects of his life, and wishes he had begun the journey sooner.
Grant completed several Discover Scuba Dive classes in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Australia. His wife convinced him to become certified so he would have more knowledge and be safer. In 2016, Grant completed his Open Water course in Townsville, Australia. His plan was to dive in warm water while on vacations but soon realized he couldn’t get away often enough and took additional training with Diver City Scuba. He became a Divemaster in 2024 and in 2025 he became a PADI Open Water SCUBA Instructor. Grant works in the store part-time, but during some of the winter months he ventures to the warmer waters.
In 2013 while snorkeling in Cuba, Ying suffered a near drowning. The experience was so terrifying that she would not swim again for almost 8 years.
One day, she thought: “What if I have a scuba tank? I can’t drown, right?” So, she started to swim daily at Pan Am, and signed up for SCUBA lessons with Diver City.
She said: It is not just simply swimming again; it is about overcoming this fear and challenging herself.
Today, Ying is hooked on scuba diving and finished her Divemaster program in November of 2023. Her goal is to become a TDI full cave diver in 2025.

Norman’s journey began with a Discover SCUBA while vacationing in Mexico in 2019, and he knew he found something he loved. Over the next few years, Norm dove as often as he could, completing his Divemaster training in 2021 and then became an Instructor in 2023. Norm still loves to dive at West Hawk and enjoys sharing the magic of the underwater world with others.
An overboard pair of favourite sunglasses at the bottom of the lake, a thirst for adventure, and never shying away from a good challenge was the perfect recipe to bring Tom to his passion for scuba. He was immediately hooked and his only regret is that he didn’t find scuba earlier in his life. Tom wants to help others find their love of scuba too, so he became a certified Divemaster in 2021 with the goal of becoming an instructor. The overboard sunglasses have never been found, but an insatiable love of scuba was.
